Our Irish SIM project partners, Momentum, recently gathered at the beautiful Hillside Organic & Holistic Farm in Roscommon, Ireland, for an energising summer event. The day began with a short company meeting, setting the stage for an inspiring session with the host, Sean Butler. Sean shared his extensive knowledge of regenerative organic farming and the principles of a circular economy, providing valuable insights into sustainable agriculture practices.
Sean brought us through methods that restore and enhance the health of our ecosystems. We learned how these practices not only improve soil health but also promote biodiversity, reduce carbon footprints, and enhance the resilience of farming systems. Sean’s passion for sustainability was evident and infectious, encouraging us to think more deeply about our impact on the environment.
Hillside Farm is more than an organic farm; it is also a sanctuary. Sean and his wife Helen, a dedicated youth worker, regularly host young people on their farm. They use this serene environment to support youth education and address various social issues. Helen’s work with youth adds another layer of significance to the farm’s operations, demonstrating the powerful intersection of agriculture, education, and social work.
A highlight of our visit was the hands-on experience of planting a damson tree. Sean guided us through environmentally friendly techniques such as grass trampling, which promotes tree growth without the need for pesticides. This practical session took us out of the office and immersed us in nature, grounding our ideas in real-world practice and the importance of sustainable methods.
The day at Hillside Farm was a powerful reminder of the social impact of our work on local communities and the environment. It showcased the real value of Momentum’s efforts on the SIM project and reinforced our commitment to sustainability. Engaging directly with the farm’s operations and learning from Sean’s expertise provided us with a deeper understanding of how our initiatives can contribute to a more sustainable and socially responsible future. We left the farm with renewed energy and a stronger commitment to making a positive impact through our work with Momentum and the SIM project.
